Managed PostgreSQL, GDPR-compliant and hosted in Europe

Daily backups, point-in-time recovery, monitoring and version upgrades on standard PostgreSQL, run from France by a European operator. No egress fees, no US Cloud Act exposure, and you can leave any time with a plain pg_dump.

If your application stores personal data in PostgreSQL, where that database physically runs and who can legally compel access to it is a compliance question, not just an infrastructure one. Bunker runs your PostgreSQL on infrastructure located in France and operated by a European company, with a GDPR Article 28 data processing agreement on file.

You get the operational comfort of a managed database, the same engine you already know, and a clean exit whenever you want it.

Why teams move their PostgreSQL to Bunker

European jurisdiction, GDPR by default

Your data sits in France and is processed by a European operator, outside the reach of US extraterritorial law such as the Cloud Act and FISA 702. A Data Processing Agreement under GDPR Article 28 covers the relationship, which also satisfies DSGVO and AVG requirements for your DACH and Benelux customers.

Managed, but still plain PostgreSQL

We handle backups, monitoring, minor and major version upgrades, and high availability. The engine itself is unmodified open-source PostgreSQL, so your queries, drivers and ORMs behave exactly as they do locally. Nothing about the managed layer changes the SQL you write.

Flat pricing, no egress surprises

You pay a predictable monthly price for your instance. Reading your own data back out costs nothing, because there are no egress fees. Budgeting a year ahead does not require modelling traffic patterns or decoding a per-gigabyte transfer table.

Reversible, no lock-in

Everything is built on standard PostgreSQL: pg_dump for a full export, logical replication to stream into another instance. There are no proprietary extensions you can only run here, so moving in or out is a normal database migration rather than a rewrite.

What the managed service covers, and how you get out

Your appPostgreSQLYour applicationManaged, in France

Every instance comes with daily backups and point-in-time recovery, so you can restore to a specific moment before a bad migration or an accidental delete. We watch connection counts, replication lag, disk usage and slow queries, and we apply minor patches and major version upgrades on a schedule you agree to. High availability is built on PostgreSQL streaming replication with automatic failover, which means a node failure does not become an outage. Day to day, you connect over the standard wire protocol and treat it like any other PostgreSQL server.

Because the engine is unmodified open-source PostgreSQL, reversibility is the default rather than a feature we had to add. A single pg_dump produces a portable logical backup, and logical replication lets you move a live database into another provider with minimal downtime. You are never holding data in a proprietary format, so the decision to stay is yours each month, not a consequence of being unable to leave.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PostgreSQL data subject to the US Cloud Act with Bunker?

No. Bunker is a European company and your database runs on infrastructure in France, so it sits outside the reach of US extraterritorial law such as the Cloud Act and FISA 702. With AWS RDS or Azure Database the operator is US-headquartered, which keeps the data within scope of those laws regardless of which region the servers are in.

Can I export my database and leave whenever I want?

Yes. The instance is standard PostgreSQL, so pg_dump gives you a complete portable export and logical replication lets you stream your data into another instance with little downtime. There are no proprietary formats or extensions to unwind first, and exporting your own data carries no egress fee.

Do you sign a GDPR data processing agreement?

Yes. A Data Processing Agreement under GDPR Article 28 is available and covers our role as your processor. The same document answers DSGVO requirements in Germany and Austria and AVG requirements in the Netherlands, since they are national implementations of the same regulation.

What does the managed service handle for me?

Daily backups with point-in-time recovery, monitoring of connections, replication lag and disk usage, scheduled minor patches and major version upgrades, and high availability through streaming replication with automatic failover. You manage your schema and queries; we keep the database running underneath.
